Help Haiti
A major earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, has wreaked havoc in the impoverished Caribbean island of Haiti. The earthquake struck January 12th at 5 pm EST in a highly populated region 17 km from the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Thousands are feared dead, many buildings have collapsed and the under-developed infrastructure has been severely damaged. The island has never experienced an earthquake of this intensity before and Humanity First has been on the ground since January 16th, to help them face the challenges ahead.
Search and rescue operations, consisting of 1,500 workers from around the world have rescued 70 people in Port-Au-Prince. In addition to Port-Au-Prince, the earthquake and resulting aftershocks have caused significant damage and deaths in the coastal strip west of the city to Leogane where 90% of buildings were destroyed and most families are living without any shelter. Estimates suggest that over 3 million people are in need of immediate shelter and non-food assistance, with growing concerns for people still not treated for trauma wounds. The death-toll is now estimated to be between 250,000 and 300,000.
